みかんはどうして食べられちゃった？

Sometimes I get stuck in a rut, where I think way to seriously about life. Good thing I have a hilarious family! みかんはどうして食べられちゃった？ (This joke only works in Japanese, but why did the mandarin orange get eaten?) 走るのが下手だったから！ (Because it was bad at running! The stem in Japanese is called heta, which sounds like "bad at.") Joke by Rina.

A Poem: Silver Apricots

Last year at this time, I had imagined I would be in France now, but here I am still in Japan. I still have a Pezens-shaped cavity in my heart, but I feel so lucky to be in Japan. It means I get to experience the beautiful seasons for a second time. Are the seasons more stunning or particular or well-celebrated anywhere else in the world? 紅葉 kōyō is on its way out. The momiji were stunning on Mt. Takao, which I got to climb. Now they're shedding. The Ginkgo trees lasted a bit longer, but they are balding, too. Things are looking a little more drab. But I was interested to learn that they are sometimes called "maidenhair trees," and that Japanese name of Ginkgo nuts actually means "silver apricot." 自転車乗りの少年: Boy on Bicycle On my way to the station Sunday morning, the streets are quiet. Most people are still in bed. All but the odango shop are closed and shuttered. But on my way to the station Sunday morning, with a quiet crank a boy on bicycle passes by. I wonder where he's going? (He was not actually so sad-looking–more serious–but I accidentally drew his mouth a little frowny!)
